US to Iran: You have two weeks

Washington says Tehran has two weeks to decide between suspending its uranium enrichment program and facing 'further isolation'.

In a Saturday statement, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said time has come for Tehran to choose between confrontation and meeting Western demands over its enrichment program.

"We hope the Iranian people understand that their leaders need to make a choice between cooperation, which would bring benefits to all, and confrontation, which can only lead to further isolation," said McCormack.

The release of the statement followed nuclear talks in Geneva on a package of incentives recently presented to Iran requiring the country to suspend uranium enrichment in exchange for political and economic benefits.

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana had said earlier that Iran did not give a 'clear answer' during the talks as to whether it would accept the G5+1 package.

Solana termed his talks with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili as constructive and hoped that both sides would reach a consensus in the upcoming weeks.

Jalili, for his part, said that despite the common ground between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (G5+1), some differences of opinion still remain that must be further discussed.
